Constructions

This chapter serves as an overview of constructions that often occur in Czech.

The experiencer constructions

In czech we express a lot of phenomena through experiencer (or non-agentive, if you want a rigorous linguistic term) constructions. This formally means that the experiencer of the sentece is either in dative or accusative case. Take a look at following examples to get a little bit of grasp on this issue. Also note that every sentence is also translated to pseudoenglish to give the learner more direct notion of how it literally works.

|English|Czech|Translation to pseudoenglish| |-|-| |I'm sorry| To je mi líto| It is sorrying to me| |I'm twenty years old| Je mi dvacet let| (It) is twenty years to me| |I'm cold| Je mi zima| Cold is to me| |I like it| Líbí se mi to| It is pleasant to me| |I don't care| Je mi to jedno| It is the same to me (even more literally: it is one to me)| |I came up with something| Něco mě napadlo| Something occured to me (even more literally: something attacked me)| |I find it strange| To mi přijde divný | It's performing strangely to me (even more literally: it comes to me in a strange way)|

You can see that these constructions are being used for very basic situations in Czech and it's definitely not something niche.
